Treating African-American skin can be one of the trickiest skin problems to encounter as an esthetician. As you can see in the before picture, this client needed really aggressive peels and homecare in order to get the acne and the resulting severe hyperpigmentation under control. However, we needed to be extremely careful not to make her pigmentation worse.
The darker the skin is, the more “active” the melanocytes are. These are the cells in the dermis that create pigment. They are just waiting for any kind of stimulation in the way of picking, rubbing, heat, acne, or just about anything to form more pigment. So, in treating this color of skin, we had to be extremely careful to go very slowly in getting her skin used to products.
We use products that include vitamin a proprionate, kojic acid, hydroquinone and benzoyl peroxide in a systematic way to exfoliate the skin, keep the acne from forming and lift the hyperpigmentation.
As you can see by the progress picture (the second one), we still have some work to do. Her acne is gone, but some darkness still remains. I just showed her the before pictures today and she about fell over in amazement when she saw them. She had forgotten from whence she came…..

Your work in amazing, Laura! Thank you for giving us acne sufferers with much hope! -Christina Chico
Her skin shows so much improvement. Really amazing. Thanks for sharing.
I am using a 3piece acne kit. The cleanser is 2% saly acid, the day cream is 2% saly acid, & the night cream is 5% BP. I know that now that summer is coming I will need to wear sunscreen as well as a wide hat to protect my face.
Should I aslo use a cream with hyrdroquinine? I have some acne sores that have healed & are dark & I’d like them to go.
I have never had any chemical peel bc I dont want to get that shiny face syndrome that many get when they get a face peel.
Also, I am in the DC metro area, do you have any reccomendations for places I may go to here.
Lastly, think you should add to your blog automatic email notification. I’ll try to remember to come back here & read your response.
Hi, nice posts there
thank’s for the interesting information
Lilkunta - it’s very difficult for me to assess what skin care you should be using without knowing what type of skin you have, what type of acne you have or what the color of your skin is. Hydroquinone is a great ingredient for helping to lighten dark spots, but only use it for 3 months at a time. Chemical peels are a must for lightening dark spots. Get a “low-dose” chemical peel and you won’t get that shiny look. Find a clinic in the DC area that does PCA Chemical peels. That’s what we use in our clinic.
You can also become a long-distance client with us and we can help you with your skin. Go to our website http://www.facerealityacneclinic.com and click on Long Distance Clients to check out our program.

I see you have mentioned peels but what about people who are extremely sensitive to peels and skin resurfacing (i.e. microdermabrasion) like I am?
If you are that sensitive, then you need to go on the right home care regimen and slowly work up to stronger products. There are chemical peels that are formulated for even the most sensitive skins, so you need to go to someone who knows what they are doing with that modality. That’s how we handle our clients who have sensitive skin.
I noticed your blog on facebook groups. I just added you to my MSN News Reader. Keep up the good work buddy! Look forward to reading more from you in the future.
